Can You Automate an Older Garage Door?

Posted on

If you live in an older home that has not seen much in the way of renovation, you may need to manually open your garage door every time you want to drive in or out. This can be okay when the weather is clement or if you don't mind the exercise, but it can present significant problems if you are less mobile, or if you need to deal with stormy weather all too often. What are your options here, and is it possible to convert a manual into an automatic?

Model Specific

In principle, it is indeed possible to update your manual door but much depends on its original design. Some doors lend themselves better to automation than others.

Canopy

For example, if you have a canopy door, which is very commonplace in older buildings, it may be more difficult and need a bow arm conversion kit. This is more technical, and you should get an estimate so that the installer can have a look at the space available.

Retractable

Fully retractable "up and over" garage doors can certainly be automated, so long as there is available space for the mechanism. You will need to install an electric motor and wire to a wall switch, and most people in this situation will also introduce remote control activation.

Hinged

Some people have doors that hinge to the side, and as these are relatively simplistic, you may be able to automate them as well.

Security

Don't forget that a fully automated garage door can be a lot safer than a manual alternative. When everything is set up and the door is connected to the boom mechanism, it'll be a lot harder to force it open from the outside. There is far less resistance when the door is not automated, and if would-be burglars are "casing" the area looking for opportunities, they may notice that your property has a manual garage door and mark it down for further attention.

Additional Safety

Also, an automatic door will be equipped with sensors that detect if something is in the way and reverse operation if necessary. This is a safety measure, and it can certainly help to prevent injuries to toddlers or animals should they be in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Next Step

Talk with your garage door installation expert to see if your current door is capable of automation. Even if it isn't, they may be able to install a brand-new automatic door from scratch.
